Google SiteMap Information
Google Sitemaps are used widely now and it the best way to get your site listed on the first page of the search results for free.

Add your Website (URL) to Google. Takes about 2 or 3 weeks to be found Google's search engine


Yahoo
Submit your site to Yahoo.

Pay Per Click:
For some guaranteed top listings check out Google AdWords. To advertise at MSN, Alta Vista and some others check the Overture pay per click.

Image alt tags:

As of this writing, Google and most other search engines DO read image "alt" tags. You will want to edit or add these tags to every image on your web pages. In Notepad you can do a "edit" "find" and find "img" to check all of these. Below is a sample of an image with an alt tag included:
